Images of Sakamoto Town in Otsu City

Located at the eastern foot of Mt. Hiei, Sakamoto once flourished as the temple town of the retired monks of the Enryakuji Temple. Sakamoto is famous for its beautiful stone walls and designated as an important traditional structures preservation area. Walk uphill through Sakamoto historic town along mossy stone walls, seeing temples, shrines and numbers of small streams from Hiei-zan was very relaxing. In the tranquil precincts nestled in calm and deep cedar forest, you can feel that religions in Japan have an intimate relation with nature. The area around Sakamoto has many wonderful gardens in the section containing the satobo, or residence for monks.
